Le Manh Thai was secretary of Vietnam National Salvation Youth Union in Quang Tri Province when he was mobilized into the army . After attending a army intelligence course , he became the military officer in charge of interrogating prisoners , under the Department of Army Intelligence Bureau , the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army. In 1954 he joined the Dien Bien Phu campaign in that capacity .

With his rank , a military officer in charge of interrogating France prisoners in the Dien Bien Phu battle, Le Manh Thai recorded the day 's events in his memoir entitled " Dien Bien Phu - through the testimony of the French generals " with new materials which is useful and interesting in order to give readers some important details of that memorable date .

The book consists of five main content:
