Dong Son Culture in Vietnam 90 years of discovery and study (part 1)

Dong Son Culture is one of three well-known archaeological cultures that contributed to form the first administrative state of Vietnam. The first site was accidentally discovered in 1924 at Dong Son village (Thanh Hoa province). In 1934, R. Heine-Geldern, an archaeologist, proposed to take a name of Dong Son Culture.

Dragon is a sacred and legendary creature appeared long time ago in the arts of the West and the Orientation cultures. In Vietnam, the dragon icon has been found since the nation building time of Hung King through the legend of Vietnamese ancestors of "Con Rong chau Tien"(Children of Dragon, Grandchildren of Gods). To Vietnamese people, the dragon brings rain, essential for agriculture. It represents the emperor, the prosperity and power of the nation.

Results on the excavations on the Phu Truong firing kiln relic in Ham Thuan Bac, Binh Thuan province.

Since 2005, on the construction site of Phu Truong (Ham Thuan Bac – Binh Thuan), people have found a number of pieces of ceramic and terra-cotta tiles. Later, the Binh Thuan Museum has made a test and analysis to show that this site used to be an area for ceramics kiln dating back 10th -11th centuries and of Champa people.

The Vietnam National Museum of History was established on 26/9/2011 under the Decision number. 1674/QĐ-TTg issued by Vietnamese Prime Minister, merging the Museum of Vietnamese Revolution and Museum of Vietnamese History.

The Dong Son Culture was first discovered in the province of Thanh Hoa in 1924 and the term of “Dong Son Culture” became officially in use in 1934. Nevertheless, several relics of the Dong Son Culture had been known earlier by many Vietnamese.
