Celebrating 90 years of discovery and research on Dong Son culture (1924 - 2014): The Vietnam National Museum of History and the works of research and promotion of Dong Son cultural heritage

The Dong Son culture plays an important role in the development of Vietnamese history. It proved to be material foundation for the establishment of the first kingdom of ancient Vietnam. In the action plan made by the Vietnam National Museum of History in 2014, the celebration of 90 years of discovery and research on Dong Son culture is one of our main tasks.

The role of the Vietnam National Museum of History in the system of Vietnamese museums and the prestige in political and cultural foreign relations

1. The Vietnam National Museum of History (VNMH) was established (pursuant to Decision 1674/QĐ –TTg dated 26/9/2011) by merging the two former museums, the Museum of Vietnamese History and the Museum of Vietnamese Revolution. It has 16 specialized divisions and 250 staff, mainly bachelors, 3 doctors, 41 MA, 7 post graduated and tens of master students. The museum has been fulfilling its personnel organization to grow up as a historical and cultural researching and educational center.

Tale of Vietnamese Dragon

In Asian myths, no creature is as impressive as the dragon. For Vietnamese peasants, the dragon was a vivid symbol of the fourfold deity-clouds, rain, thunder and lighting. Represented by an S shape, dragons are depicted on artifacts dating back to the Dong Son-Au Lac culture, which existed in northern Vietnam in the first millennium B.C. Later came the cult of Tu Phap, or the Four Miracles. Long ago stargazers identified the Dragon constellation made up of seven stars arranged like an S. The brightest star is the Mind (Tam), also known as the Divine (Than) star. The word Than may also be read as Thin (Dragon), which denotes the third month of the lunar calendar and represents the Yang vital energy.

By the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, many excavations on the ancient citadel of Thang Long had been deployed. Many objects made of ceramic and terra-cotta were discovered and sent to the Louis Finot Museum, now the Vietnam National Museum of History. Many are inscribed with the place of origin as Quan Ngua, Ngoc Ha, Van Phuc, Huu Tiep, Kim Ma, Cong Vi, Lieu Giai and bearing the characteristics of Ly-Tran Dynasties. Many objects of which have been registered as the national treasures and now are on display at the permanent exhibition system of the VNMH Museum.

Dong Son Culture in Vietnam 90 years of discovery and study (part 3)

Dong Son Culture is one of three well-known archaeological cultures that contributed to form the first administrative state of Vietnam. The first site was accidentally discovered in 1924 at Dong Son village (Thanh Hoa province). In 1934, R. Heine-Geldern, an archaeologist, proposed to take a name of Dong Son Culture.

The Louis Finot Museum (now Vietnam National Museum of History – VNMH Museum) is a beautiful house. It can be seen far away from Long Bien Bridge. It has a mixed style of Vietnamese, Japanese, Thai and Chinese architectures but harmoniously combined to form a pure Asian style.
