Some considerations on the first results of the archaeological exploration of the site of the altar Xa Tac of Thang Long (Nam Dong, Dong Da, Hanoi)

In order to contribute to the work of restoration of the central part of the site of Chua Dau, from the end of March to the end of July 2006, the Museum of History of Vietnam and the Service of Culture and Information of Ha Tay have together carried out the excavation aiming at gathering scientific informations relative to the creation and to changes of this architectural construction.

The pagoda Dau, a precious national cultural patrimony

Speaking of the pagoda Dau, all we know that it is a famous pagoda of Ha Tay, sheltering the whole corpse relics of the two bonzes Vu Khac Minh and Vu Khac Truong, place surnamed first famous landscape of Vietnam. The pagoda is situated on a hill in the middle of the field of village Gia Phuc (commune of Nguyen Trai, district of Thuong Tin). It is covered with luxuriant trees and surrounded with lakes with the river Nhue flowing behind, forming really a picturesque landscape .

Relic of Co Bi out-of-town palace

The Co Bi out-of-town palace is in Trau Quy commune, Gia Lam district, Ha Noi capital, far from Ha Noi centre about 14km in the East. According to the historical book: "Summary of Vietnam general history written by order of the king" (1727), the Co Bi, in 1727, has been a famous spot with beautiful landscape of Tonkin (Northern Vietnam) and near the mother's village of Trinh Cuong lord. That's why, he chose the Co Bi for building a new palace himself with the name Kim Thanh (golden citadel).

Apart from discovering the architectural vestiges of Ly, Tran, Le, Nguyen dynasties, the National Museum of Vietnamese History archaeologists also collected a collection of abudant artifact with diffirent types in this relic, in which most of them are building materials, architectural decorations and ceramics of Ly dynasty (11th - 13th century) and Restored Le dynasty (16th - 18th century) and the few of the other ones are in the Chinese domination period (1st - 10th century), Mac dynasty (16th century), Nguyen dynasty (19th - early 20 century).

In the programme of archaeological studies on the territory of Hanoi to commemorate the 1000 e anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi, the Museum of History of Vietnam in coordination with the Service of Culture and Information of Hanoi and the Leading Bureau of the 1000 e anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi, has undertaken the excavation of the group of sites of the temple – pagoda Ba Tam (Duong Xa – Gia Lam – Hanoi).

The group of sites of the temple and pagoda of Ba Tam

The group of sites of the temple and pagoda of Ba Tam is situated in the commune of Duong Xa, district of Gia Lam, suburb of Hanoi. The group is 20km from the center of Hanoi to the east. From the center of Hanoi, one passes through the bridge Chuong Duong, and by following the national road nr 5 in the direction of Haiphong about 8km, one arrives to the commune of Duong Xa. The group is situated on the left, quite near the national road.

Ban Chieng site in Nong Han district, Udon Thani province (Northeast Thailand). In the years of 60 - 70 of 20th century, the Ban Chieng site was discovered and excavated with a huge amount of objects include many diffirent materials as: stone, pottery, bronze, iron, glass, bone. That's why the Ban Chieng was become a famous site and played a very important role in studying of Metal Age in Northeast Thailand as well as Southeast Asia.
