Vietnam National Museum of History

During the visit to Vietnam, on the afternoon of March 13, 2025, Mr. Kléber Arhoul - Director of the Caen Memorial (France), along with his delegation, visited the Vietnam National Museum of History (VNMH). The delegation was welcomed by Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoan - Deputy Director of VNMH, Ms. Pham Thi Mai Thuy - Head of the Education and Public Affairs Department and staff from the Communications and International Relations Department.

During the meeting, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hoan expressed her pleasure in welcoming Mr. Kléber Arhoul and his delegation on their first visit to the Museum. She provided an overview of the history of musuem building, which was originally the Louis Finot Museum of the École Française d'Extrême-Orient. She also mentioned that the Museum currently keeps over 200,000 artifacts and documents that reflect the history and culture of Vietnam. Many of these valuable collections were received from the École Française d'Extrême-Orient. In addition, the Museum also preserves numerous documents and excavation reports from renowned French scholars such as Louis Finot, L. Pajot, Henri Parmentier, Louis Malleret, and Jean Boisselier,  concerning the history and culture of Vietnam. Currently, the Museum is implementing a plan to digitize its materials and is working on translating and publishing specialized books to promote the value of the heritage.

Mr. Kléber Arhoul said that  prior to his visit, he had researched and learned that Vietnam is a country with a diverse and rich culture, with important historical landmarks. He also expressed his great interest in the research conducted by French scholars. Therefore, when he arrived in Vietnam, he wished to visit a place that could fully and comprehensively preserve the history and culture of Vietnam, which is why he chose the Vietnam National Museum of History.

At the meeting, both sides hoped that in the future there would be more opportunities for deeper cooperation in researching the history and culture of Vietnam.

At the end of the discussion, Mr. Kléber Arhoul and his delegation visited the permanent exhibition of VNMH. He was very impressed with the collections at the Museum, such as the National Treasure - the Bell of Van Ban Temple, the collection of Vietnamese handicrafts, and especially the achievements of French scholars.

From 18 May 2019, the exhibition “Treasures of the Red River. Archaeological Collections from the Museums of Vietnam” will be running in the Winter Palace’s Halls of the History of Ancient Writings. It is being timed to mark Ho Chi Minh’s birthday and the days of the city named in his honour.

On the afternoon of March 4th 2025, the Vietnam National Museum of History (VNMH) welcomed a delegation from the Taiwan Ancient Jade Research Association, led by Mr. Ou Yang Dat, President of the Association. Joining the delegation were Prof. Dr. Tong Trung Tin, President of the Vietnam Archaeological Association and Prof. Dr. Bui Van Liem, Vice President of the Vietnam Archaeological Association. The representatives from VNMH was attended by Mr. Nguyen Quoc Binh, Head of the Exhibition Department; Mr. Dinh Ngoc Trien, Head of the Artifact Management Department, along with staff from the Communication and External Relations Department.
