Since 1977, the International Committee of Museum (ICOM) celebrated the International Museum Day – IMD as a special day for the international museum community. In this occasion, museums can introduce their cultural activities to public. The IMD is also an opportunity for museum professionals to meet the museum visitors.
Traditionally, the IMD is held around May 18. The celebration can last within one day or one week targeting the message: Museum is an important tool of cultural exchange, enriching the culture and mutual co-operation for development, understanding and peace in the world.
Annually, the Consultant Board of ICOM proposes a theme for the museum operation of the year, with view to strengthen the study, collection, exhibition and introduction to make the museum truly a key factor of the society. The theme set for the 2014 is “Museum collections make connections”. Through this, museums can introduce the public a chance to find the stories behind the museum’s collections. The theme also highlights the role of the museum in making the connections between the visitors and the international cultures. Museum is said to be a cultural institution and is able to connect the generations because it let the current and future generations understand about their original and history.
To celebrate the 2014 IMD, visitors to the VNMH will be free of charge on May 18. This is a chance for you to understand about Vietnamese culture and history through the collections and materials in our exhibition halls.
