On 6-5-2014, at 25 Tong Dan street, Hanoi, VNMH will open a temporary exhibition to exhibit the propaganda posters in the resistance war against French colonialists in 1946-1954.

In the fine arts of Vietnam, the propaganda posters are young fine arts but grow quickly to meet the revolutionary tasks. Together with newspapers and propaganda leaflets, they become fighting weapons; stir up spirit of people and propaganda political tasks or applause people.
In the world, the propaganda posters have been used for a long time, especially they have been popular in the socialist countries like Soviet, China, Cuba, and Poland… In Vietnam, they were very popular in the resistance wars. They are said to be appeared since the early time of August Revolutionary (1945). The first posters can be named as of the artists Nguyen Do Cung, To Ngoc Van, Luong Xuan Nhi…
In the French war 1946-1954, the propaganda posters were made by very simple ways but carried a strong mind and will. Obviously, they are lively descriptions about a period of history. Public can see an improvement in the revolutionary artist’s point of view on the arts. Though they are created for propaganda purposes, they are really a type of fine arts through the beauty and meet the demand of common public on arts.
Most posters are anonymous works. Some artists told that the artist at that time almost forgot to sign his/her name with the posters, as they were so happy to serve for the revolution, and thought that his/her effort was other’s.
Almost propaganda posters in the 1946-1954 kept at VNMH have small sizes so it is easy to carry, deliver and keep. The paintings were handmade, in stone, wood materials or few made of soil, and bamboo papers. They were mostly painted in black, only a few simply colored.
They were made and delivered in Viet Bac base, zone 3, and zone 4. We found no from the South and Southern Central.

VNMH is keeping around 200 copies of propaganda posters in the period of 1946-1954. The content covers Vietnamese history from August Revolution through ending of Dien Bien Phu battle. This can be seen as a lively history book in images and artistic language in the Vietnamese revolutionary history.
On the 60th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu victory (7/5/1954-7/5/2014), with aims at introducing public about a type of cultural art contributed to the revolution, Vietnam National Museum of History would like to open a temporary exhibition entitled “The placards in the resistance war against French colonialists in 1946-1954”.
