During the first years of establishment by merging two museums, in 2012 - 2013, VNMH carried out archaeological studies and excavations in many regions of country. Such things have brought results that met demand and requirements of understanding about past cultures, religions, arts … and getting collections of objects for conservation and exhibition.

The noticeable studies and excavations made are:

1. Co-operated with Lang Son Museum (Lang Son province), to excavate the Pre-History caves in Tràng Định, Bình Gia, Lộc Bình, Chi Lăng and Hữu Lũng districts. We have collected some fossil samples in Na Duong coal - mine area and defined the possible sites for further studies and excavations such as Chi Phuong, Tham Dan Lai and Minh Le sites in Trang Dinh and Binh Gia districts.

2. Co-operated with National Museum of Korea to excavate Bai Coi relic (Nghi Xuan, Ha Tinh province) for the third excavation. The Bai Coi relic’s objects will be exhibited in South Korea in 2014.

National Museum of Korea’s archaeologists and VNMH’s personnel worked in Bai Coi for the 3rd time

3. Co-operated with experts from University of East Asia and Saitama (Japan) to excavate Luy Lau citadel (Bac Ninh province). Initially, it has been worked out for site status assessment and map. A seminar of brick tomb and Vietnamese history in the early AD period will be organized in the coming days.

4. The excavation of Ly architectural ruins in Phuong Nhi mountain - a tower complex (Nam Dinh province) has found many objects and buildings belonged to Ly dynasty and providing useful information about Buddhist architecture under Ly dynasty.

5. Binh Chau shipwreck excavation and old sea port studies

- VNMH, Vietnam Institute of Archaeology, Quang Ngai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism excavated a shipwreck in Chau Thuan (Quang Ngai province). Through the technique and structure of ceramic objects and bronze coin, it revealed the date of the shipwreck is 13 century, or it is the earliest shipwreck found in Vietnamese ocean.

- Collaborated with Relic Management Board of Quang Ninh province to run the research and archaeological mapping to serve for master planning of Van Don sea port relic.

- Vietnam and South Korea co-operation program: VNMH and the National Research Institute of Marine Cultural Heritage (South Korea) implemented the research of old sea ports of Van Don (Quang Ninh), Pho Hien (Hung Yen), Lach Truong (Thanh Hoa), Hoi Thong (Ha TInh), Thanh Ha, Bao Vinh (Thua Thien Hue), and Thi Nai (Binh Dinh).

6. Research and excavation some Champa relics

- The excavation of Thap Mam (Binh Dinh province) provided more information about the tower master plan and found round statues and decorative materials.

- Researching Liem Thuan, Liem An and Phu Sung relics (Binh Thuan province), and Xuan Duong tower and old water wells in Da Nang City. Especially, an excavation in Go Cam Mit (Hoa Vang, Da Nang) has collected precious items made of marble and gold.

7. Oc Eo cultural relic research in Dong Thap and Long An provinces: We have researched many sites that have Oc Eo architectural characteristics.

With successful results in big scaled excavations that gained good comments (Bai Coi relic, Ly architectural site, Thap Mam and Cam Mit…), VNMH will carry more studies about Champa and Oc Eo cultures and Vietnamese marine heritage. Through such excavations, we have collected valuable items to present to local and international public through interesting exhibitions.
