In two days 4th and 5th September 2012, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Film Institute hold a workshop on Preservation and accessing of digital audio – visual.

Over 50 students are technical officers from the Vietnam Film Institute, the Military Film studio, the Vietnam television, The Vietnam National Museum of History, the Ho Chi Minh museum, ect., joined in the workshop.

In the workshop, Dr. Richard Wright, the senior expert in preservation and storage field from BBC storage institute and the Center of BBC Research and Development (United Kingdom), who has 45 years of experience in processing datas on video and digital audio and a builder of the website Preservatio Guide (http://wiki.prestospace.org) – the most useful and prestigious website in preservation of audio – visual data technology, guided students to approach some matters of longer preservation applied to audio and video datas along with digitizing and accessing them effectively. Students studied on evaluation, planning, building preservation method, priority goal and digitizing audios, videos, films step by step. Some real experiences of BBC and Neitherland Visual and Audio Institute that brought success in digital world and technical problems in accessing digital datas were also introduced to students.

Digitizing datas and videos for storage and accessing is an inevitable trend of modern society by its advantages. Advanced countries have carried out the job and had many successful experiences in this field. This is an advantage for Vietnam to learn the experiences to store and preserve the Vietnam national cultural heritages as well as to serve needs of public with accessing and studying datas. Beside the Vietnam Film Institute, The Vietnam National Museum of History and other museums and offices also have storing and accessing video activities. And they initially carry out digitizing datas for preserving, accessing and using but the work also has difficulties and lack of funding, ect. The workshop brought valuable knowledge and experiences to students in digitalization technology field.
