Column pedestal, stone, 1057 AD., Phat Tich pagoda, Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province
The pedestal is square, and the upper round surface is decorated with lotus petals. A pair of dragons forming a Bodhi leaf is inside each petal. All the four sides are decorated with orchestras of lively musicians. Scenes of flower-offering to Buddha, musicians perfoming, graceful Apsara dancers similar to Indian dancers as represented in Champa art, etc, were elegantly and sophisticatedly carved. The object reflects the powerful development of the musical and dance art of Vietnam during the Ly dynasty, as well as cultural exchanges between Dai Viet and Champa at that time.
